PGA Tour’s ‘Florida Swing’ sets the stage for Hilton Head’s moment in the sun

Planning Your Vacation

The PGA Tour’s thrilling, annual journey begins each year on the West Coast, where players tackle iconic stops such as Pebble Beach and Torrey Pines. But as the calendar shifts toward spring, the focus pivots to the Sunshine State for the legendary Florida Swing – a four-week stretch that has long been a proving ground for the world’s best golfers.

Featuring some of the most challenging and historically significant courses in professional golf, the Florida Swing demands precision, patience, and mental toughness. These four events take place on courses known for their punishing water hazards, undulating greens, and dramatic finishing stretches. From Bay Hill to TPC Sawgrass, from Innisbrook to PGA National, each stop on the tour’s Florida Swing presents its own unique challenges.

The Cognizant Classic at PGA National Resort & Spa presents one of the toughest tests in golf. The Champion Course is home to the infamous Bear Trap (holes 15-17), a treacherous stretch of water-lined holes that has ruined many players’ hopes. A recent renovation has refined the course’s visual appeal while maintaining its relentless difficulty.

The Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill Club & Lodge presents a demanding layout that has tested even the greatest players. Bay Hill’s Championship Course is known for its difficult par-4s and the famous 18th hole, a long par-4 with water lurking along the left side, setting up dramatic finishes year after year.

Next, the Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass – often called golf’s “fifth major” – showcases one of the most recognizable courses in the world. Pete Dye’s Players Stadium Course features a thrilling mix of risk and reward, most notably on the par-3 17th hole, where the island green has tormented even the best professionals. The tournament’s closing stretch is arguably the most exciting in golf, with water hazards and swirling winds keeping the leaderboard in constant flux.

The tour then moves to Innisbrook Resort & Golf Club, where the Copperhead Course hosts the Valspar Championship. This course is renowned for its closing stretch, the Snake Pit, which consists of three brutally tough holes that often determine the champion. Copperhead’s recent updates have made the layout even more formidable, demanding pinpoint accuracy and resilience.

At Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort, we eagerly anticipate the Florida Swing every year because we know that means Hilton Head Island’s very own Heritage of Golf is right around the corner in April, one week after the most anticipated of them all, the Masters at Augusta National.

From the Florida Swing to the Heritage at Hilton Head

As the PGA Tour moves through Florida, anticipation builds for one of the most beloved stops on the schedule: the RBC Heritage on Hilton Head Island. Following the drama of the Masters, the Heritage offers a refreshing change of pace, with its stunning seaside vistas and tree-lined fairways. The tournament has long been a favorite among players and fans, combining elite competition with the relaxed Lowcountry atmosphere.

Golf enthusiasts flocking to Hilton Head for Heritage Week should not miss an opportunity to experience one of the island’s premier golf destinations: Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort.
